The Polka Dot is Back

There was a time, in the ’70s and ’80s, when polka dots were considered somewhat dowdy. But they’re back in vogue now; and how. Classic polka flaunters—like Minnie Mouse with her cute little red-and-white dotted dress and bow; and Julia Roberts’ soft, feminine brown-and-white polka dot dress in Pretty Woman—aside, of late, a number of international celebrities have been sporting the polka.

You can also go for a simple churidar-kurta with a polka dotted dupatta—like one of Manish Malhotra’s designs; or a sleek sari with subtle dots—like a Satya Paul ensemble. Moschino does some great handbags, shirts and shoes using dots. In fact, a number of designer boutiques across the city offer a dash of polka. Else, scout through the multiple fabric bazaars and stores in most shopping centres—you’ll come across reams and yards of the ubiquitous dot.
