The Secret of the Borsalino Hats

If you’re anything like most people, then a hat for you is just a hat. However, there are people who have taken hat manufacturing, this seemingly basic activity, to a whole other level. Such is the case of the good people at Borsalino who, over the last 150 years, proved that a hat is more than a hat. It is a work of art.

The family business began in 1857, when Alessandro Giuseppe Borsalino and his brother Lazzaro joined forces and set the foundations for what would become one of the most innovative firm in the Had manufacturing business.

Until 1940, Borsalino has continuously increased its output of hats and thanks to the good business, it has always helped its local community. It built an orphanage and an old people’s home.

After the Second World War, the firm started expanding throughout the Western Europe, the United States and even South America.

Borsalino HatIn 1970, the brand was revived after the movie “Borsalino” was released, starring Alain Delon and Jean Paul Belmondo. Together with it 1973 sequel, “Borsalino & Co” with the same leading actors, it sparked the attention of a new generations.

In 1979, the last descendent of the family has left the business, while the firm continued to grow bigger.

In the last few years, Borsalino added a line on men’s clothing, with the characteristic style and elegance it has shown over the last century and a half.

A few words about the legendary hats

While they did have numerous different models over the years, one stand out above all: the Panama hat. It has a long history behind it. It is said that when the first Spanish conquerors set foot in the Panama area, the natives were wearing some sort of hats made out of bat skin.
